Domestic fires from cooking sources are a global problem. One particular type of cooker is the paraffin or kerosene stove. This is used in Africa, India and China and is a major cause of concern. The Paraffin Safety Association of Southern Africa has developed an educational video to highlight the problem and is actively involved in looking at alternative and or safer cooking stoves. For more information about the work of the Paraffin Safety Association please visit www.pasasa.org Most paediatric burns result from unfortunate accidents that are potentially preventable. Prevention involves an awareness of the dangers within the home and the environment and taken often simple steps to reduce the risks of injury. One such educational initiative has been taken in Hong Kong used a focussed epidemiological approach to paediatric burn injury. Seventeen recurring mechanisms of burn injury were identified from over 140 cases analysed. This has resulted in a web based burn prevention educational portfolio which can be viewed (in three languages) using the following link. Hong Kong Burns Association - Prevention |
